“Little Things”

not sure why my happiness is a destination
always around another bend
guess it’s ’cause i want the happy ending
and can’t enjoy the little things

but when you long for happy endings
you notice the extremes
but the lows are so much tougher
than the highs mixed in between

i’ll play second fiddle
i’ll play rhythm while you solo over me
i’ll buy my time ’cause one day
she’ll hear my song and listen to me

i’ve filled my skin with ink
to remind me of who i need to be
if only etching you in my mind
was as easy as bringing you to me

i won’t be the first star in the sky you see
but i’ll be the brightest when you find me
’cause all i’ve ever wanted
was to light the night for you

i’ll play second fiddle

i don’t know why tears form every time
romantic movies play before my eyes
maybe it’s because i dream of the day
when true love will finally come my way

i watch the sun rise and fall
another day that’s come and gone
there is nothing i could ever achieve
better than feeling love wash over me

i’ve changed cities
i’ve changed states
i’ve tried everything
but i’m still incomplete

i’ll climb another mountain
swim across another sea
anything to find your love
anything to have you notice me

i can’t skip to the good part
where you finally fall in love with me
i have to wake up another day
and hope to find you shine on me

just know i’m on my hands and knees
praying today’s the day that we meet
i’ll try everything
because without you i’m still incomplete

i always go the long way
to try to feel less alone
i wish i had something to grab your attention
so i hope my smile is enough to catch your eye

sometimes i wish i wrote a chorus that made you want to sing along
sometimes i dream i penned a poem and you memorized every word
if only i could hit the notes to sing your melody
if only life played out to the script running through my mind

i’m staring at the sunset and wonder
if it’s the same canvas you see from your bedroom
i’m laying under the stars and wonder
if they make my eyes glow just like yours

if the sun won’t rise to guide you
i’ll paint stars in the sky to light your way
if you ever feel lost at night
i’ll burn bright ’til you reach home

i have so much to give you
but don’t know where to start
if only you could see my good intentions
if only i knew i could win your heart

not sure how this will trickle out
if you will soak it up
or wish these words would just evaporate

so i’ll let it all pour out
and hope you absorb my thoughts
rather than leave them to dry up

the things i have to say
i hope they make it rain
but only as a sun shower
’cause i can’t stand to be
the cause of black clouds hanging over you

what i have to do will cause some tears
but the only thing i’ll ever want
is for them to make us blossom and grow

even though i have to go
i’ll never let you drown
i’ll be the currents pushing the storms away

hands intertwined
while the only thing i hold
is fading memories that can’t shake the cold

i see them on the bench
warmth and laughter
close lips and starry eyes
their love lighting up the skies

i run towards that light
see something that would be so bright

i reach for your hand
to pull me from an icy current i can hardly stand

to see where this could go

i would love to lead with my heart
but this isn’t the part
of my life where i get to worry
about finding my future wife

i’m running but there’s always a part of me
that feels so empty
hope there’s not a price to pay
for fighting for a better way

i love the things i show
that make you glow
i wish we had more time
being with you shouldn’t feel like a crime

i hate to let you down
but this time it has to be
time to do what’s best for me
i hate to break your heart
but my life needs to include the art
alive deep inside of me

i need to just be me
not what you want to see
i hide behind this ink

i push myself to grow
they may never know
i may have nothing to show
but when i see their tears
it stings for what feels like years

to save others from their strife

i put my heart on paper
wear it on my sleeve
share it with you
for all the world to see

isn’t it ironic
how strangers can get to know me
know my deepest secrets and feelings
better than those i see every day

the older i get
the more i yearn for intimacy
not superficial conversations
but the ones that keep your mind up all night

i spend a lot of time wondering
why people waste their breath on small talk
instead of bearing their soul

my mom always warned me to take it slow
but life is short
so i seek what’s beneath
true beauty is always underneath
i want to see your soul
